April 15, 1991
- ••• NOTE ••• I'm going to be out of town for the next 6 days for work so I probably won't be posting any more of these for the next week or so. But it will return after that. I have all of 1991 written up already so I'm sticking with this.
- Big news this week is that Sid Vicious and WCW seem to have come to an agreement where Sid will stay with the company (yeeeeah, about that...). The deal isn't done yet but Jim Herd has said that he's 99% certain that Sid was staying. But Sid's people are saying nothing is signed yet and until it is, nothing is a done deal (mmmmhmm...)
- The Earthquake/Koji Kitao incident in Japan has turned into a huge story. Kitao was the biggest sumo grand champion ever to become a professional wrestler and was a huge celebrity in Japan (Dave compares the celebrity of sumo grand champions in Japan to that of quarterbacks who win Super Bowls in America). Anyway, Kitao has been fired and is pretty much blackballed from the wrestling business completely now. There is concern among the organization that Kitao may go public with the inner workings of the business, exposing it as fake (remember, this is 1991 Japan....kayfabe is still alive, well, and very protected).
- There's a story about how the Manitoba Athletic Commission is being investigated for overcharging wrestling promotions on taxes for the last few years, but it's so boringggggggggggzzzzzzzzzzz
- More on the WM7 buyrate, which is the lowest Wrestlemania ever. Dave attributes a lot of the blame to the $29.95 price tag, which is also what they charged for WM6 (the second lowest buyrate for WM ever). Charging $30 for a PPV is just too much, he says. Though I don't understand why anyone would pay $30 for a PPV, when you can watch it for just $9.99 on the WWE Network, MAGGLE!
- There's a good chance Cactus Jack will become a regular in Japan because Baba is a huge fan of the way he works.
- AWA is claiming it will restart the promotion in September (nope).
- Ultimate Warrior suffered a staph infection in Japan but won't miss any dates (probably just took a Z-Pak).
- The Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis is closing down, which leaves only one arena in the city. The WWF has an exclusive deal with the building, however, WCW has a long history in St. Louis and draws well there, so they naturally don't want to be shut out. WWF has said they will no longer book shows in the city if the arena allows WCW to run shows there.
- Hulk Hogan's new movie Suburban Commando comes out next month. Word is that it's horrible, but not as bad as No Holds Barred at least.
